There is nothing special about being an entrepreneur. In fact, anyone can be one. In my neighbourhood, a gentleman does the high street window cleaning. He's an entrepreneur. The gentleman that runs the local newsagent/off license down the road. He’s an entrepreneur. The same goes for the people in my team and the ones I coach. They’re entrepreneurs too.
The problem for most of these people is not becoming an entrepreneur it’s moving past being self-employed.
Every entrepreneur has to start somewhere. I also started as self-employed. But I quickly learned that if I wanted to truly grow myself and my business, something had to change.
To go from myself to having a 6 figure business and a team of entrepreneurs, I had to have different skills.
The skill of selling
First, I had to learn how to sell better. I knew that if I learned how to sell, I could learn the skills I needed to grow my business revenue.
In order to hone this skill, I took a job with PC World, which forced me to grow as a salesperson or get fired. I didn’t take the job to climb the corporate ladder. I worked to learn. I also invested the time and money to start my own business, making cold calls to sell and generate revenue. I hated it, but I knew I needed it. My ability to sell today is a direct result of those investments in myself as a young man.
The skill of leading
Second, I knew that once I grew my online business, I’d have to form a team. It’s hard enough to manage yourself, let alone others. One of the hardest growth periods for an entrepreneur is learning how to lead, manage, and multiply other people. Once you master this skill, however, you can grow exponentially.
The trap many entrepreneurs fall into is thinking they are the expert on everything and that they have to do everything. They do not trust others with their business. The truth is that you are probably not an expert at all, and you can’t possibly do everything.
More than likely, you have one or two skills you excel in and that you should be focusing on. Building a team of experts is how a true entrepreneur grows his or her self and the business. Having staff you can trust and that are bought into what you are doing allows them to work in your business as you work on your business. As my business/financial mentor said, “Business and investing are team sports.”
Growing up I didn't have a father figure to teach me leadership skills, I had to get out there and take control of my life. I knew to do this I had to get a mentor and a coach. so I did. I invested in myself, learning many important leadership lessons. This convinced me of the importance of having a mentor and a coach which is why I decided to give back to people who are in the same position that I was in many short years ago and pass on the valuable lessons I learned through coaching and mentoring.
The skill of self-mastery
But the most important skill I had to learn was self-mastery.
The lack of this skill is the #1 reason why entrepreneurs fail. Self-mastery means learning how to control your fear, emotions, doubts, body, mind, and soul. If you can learn how to master these things—to control yourself—you can control the world.
Every time I lost patience with my online business, I lost. Every time I let fear set in when my cash flow statement didn’t look promising, I lost. Every time I got into the downward spiral of working in my business rather than on it, I lost.
Most entrepreneurs have certain triggers that cause them to literally lose it, that “it” being self-control. For many, it’s money. When the money runs out, the fear kicks in and the limbic part of the brain takes over. Then they do insane things. It’s no different than the caveman running for his life from the sabre-toothed tiger. You stop thinking and become reactionary.
But we’re made up of body, mind, emotions, and spirit. In order to learn how to master yourself, you must feed those things. Exercise, learn, rest, and meditate or pray. Taking the time to do those types of actions will help you to develop this most valuable skill.
But most of all, practice the opposite of fear, which is belief. In every situation, if you feel yourself losing control, stop, breathe, and think, “What do I believe?” Act accordingly and you’ll do just fine.
It is important to follow the ways to empower women because women need to stand by one another. Women need to support each other and stand together against the obstacles they face everyday. People think that we have reached gender equality, but there are obstacles facing all types of women everyday. It might take some time to get there, but here are some ways to empower women and stand as a united front.
1. BE A ROLE MODEL
One of the easiest ways to empower women around you is to be a role model to them. Be confident and show them that it is easier than they think to be a strong and powerful woman. Women are always in need of more role models to show them the way in life. You could be just the outstanding role model a women needs in her life to empower her.
2. WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE
When you call a girl a slut or a bitch, it just makes it okay for other people to use those words about women. By watching what we say about women, we can start to change the way society views certain words. A girl who is not as feminine might not be viewed as a bitch. And a girl who is free with her sexuality might not be referred to as a slut. When we start thinking more carefully about what we say, so will society.
3. COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER
Going along with watching what we say, take the time to compliment those around you. Women feel way more empowered when they have more confidence. That little boost of confidence you get when you receive a compliment might be just what you need to feel more confident. When we raise each other up, we are empowering each other to reach our full potential.
4. SPEAK UP
This is the number one thing to do out of all of the ways to empower women. If you see a woman who is being mistreated, say something! Don’t let these things just pass by. Every time that a woman is belittled, it impacts each and every one of us. By saying something, you are letting the world know that empowering women is a not something to be taken lightly.
5. START THEM AT AN EARLY AGE
More than anything, you need to establish a sense of empowerment in your daughters. Let them know early on that they can do anything they set their minds to. Having these qualities instilled in our daughters can help us create a new generation of women who will stop at nothing to achieve their dreams.
6. ACCEPT ALL TYPES OF WOMEN
Regardless of their religion, body type, sexual preference, or even fashion sense, they are all women and they all need to stick together. You are not just empowering one type of woman. You should be empowering all women to follow their dreams, no matter what their dreams are.
7. BE KIND
Even if you are not on a mission to empower the women of the world, you should still be kind. Being kind to women shows that you respect all women and you appreciate them. It is the smallest yet most sincere way to empower women. Not only are you setting a good example, you are showing the world that women can be a powerhouse but still a sweetheart at the same time. By empowering women, you are allowing them to reach their highest potential. Although we believe we live in a world of gender equality, many times women are still looked down upon and treated differently. This will be a politically incorrect article. It may seem unkind, insensitive, and cruel given the fact that so many people are hurting financially. Many have lost their jobs, homes, retirement security, and hope. Yet -- if you can see beyond today and let intelligence, not emotion, rule the day -- now is the time to position yourself for riches.
You see, the biggest predator's ball in history is in its planning stages and invitations are being sent out. For about a year now, friends and associates have been inviting me to join their investment pools. One friend has over a billion dollars in cash sitting on the sidelines. Last night, another friend said that a large bank had invited him to bid on their portfolio of foreclosures. The minimum price: $30 million in cash. He estimated that for that price we could acquire over a billion in distressed properties. For $1 million, I could buy a ticket to the party. Many people got into trouble when times were good. For example, some of my family's friends placed all their money with a financial planner during the boom years, believing the standard sales pitch that the market goes up an average of 8 percent a year -- even though it doesn't. For over 20 years, I encouraged them to learn about investing rather than blindly turn over their money to a stranger. Today, they have lost over 45 percent of their portfolio in the last two years. They are not rich people. Now they want to know what to do.
Two Types of Predator's Balls
My point is this: There are two types of predator's balls. There are balls when times are good. My family's friends were victims of this type of exploitation -- when predators get you excited about rising markets.
For example, when real estate was soaring in price, predators known as flippers emerged and began selling houses to people at sky-high prices -- many of whom had no business buying a home.
There are also predator's balls for bad times. These take advantage of the exploitations that occurred during the good times. I like the bad-times predator's balls the best because deals are plentiful, people are humble, prices are low, and opportunities abound. I hope this party lasts for at least five years. I am investing more today than I was two years ago.
